I found myself crying when an ambulance drove past, sirens blaring today. I mean, just look at all those cars who moved out of the way to let it through. Talk about #teamworkmakesthedreamwork 🤣
As ridiculous as crying at this is it got me thinking about the postpartum brain and how pregnant mothers get a stress response upgrade; meaning Mums are pretty much hardwired to be more sensitive.
You see when pregnant the Amygdala - our emotional response centre - gets thousands upon thousands of new oxytocin receptors which communicate with the hypothalamus - our hormonal response centre - to ensure that we’re more responsive to issues of wellbeing and safety for ourselves, our child(ren) AND the wider community. Because being more sensitive means we’re more likely to recognise danger and get out of its way thus ensuring the human species can carry on another day.
You read it right folks, Mums are pretty much superheroes. With this badass ability to detect danger and this supercool ability to react with immense sensitivity to anything and everything we’re basically just saving the whole human race. #nobig
And if you’re like me it also means you can’t watch the news without crying. But it’s okay coz I know it’s just my incredible Super Mum Love Power doing it’s thang.
So if you ever find yourself crying as an ambulance drives by, you hold your head high, adjust your cape and keep being a Superwoman.
