Living the Wholefoods Life

Living the Wholefoods Life

Starting to eat more wholefoods can be confusing so I usually suggest first off just swapping any food you’d usually buy in a packet pre-made for it’s fresh homemade alternative. Homemade everything is generally better than packet anything. This step has taken me years but now as a family I make everything for us from scratch by buying single ingredients in bulk - like almonds - then using them to make my own almond milk, flat bread and muesli. I also have now found that roasted sweet potato makes a good addition to Mexican food instead of corn chips and thin slices of potato, eggplant and zucchini can be easily swapped in to lasagna. Come up with some single ingredient swaps you can do for the foods you eat! .

Once you can handle making everything from scratch next is making sure you get the best quality you can afford. Certified organic and pasture fed/free range meats and animal products are absolute non negotiables for me now but that took a couple of years to source and budget for. This is not only important nutritionally but also from a sustainability and ethical point of view. Do some research and then make it work as you can. ..

Then once you have these points covered you can start working out what works for you. If you eat dairy and meat how do they make you feel after doing so? Does gluten make you feel bloated? Do any veggies give you an upset tummy? Do you find your mood is different when you eat something? I suggest keeping a food diary for at least a month just so you can start to notice what you eat and how you feel afterwards. Food allergies and intolerance are at an all time high because of the level of processing that goes into our food these days. I think you’d be surprised to see how the foods you’re eating are really impacting your health.

..

And finally, there is no one diet for everyone. No matter what anyone says you are the only person who can work out what works for you. So try the steps above and take your time with it (it took me a nutrition degree AND 4 years of working as a nutritionist to figure out I’ve had a lifelong issue with grains, gluten and dairy) so be patient with yourself and ask for help if you need it!
